microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion boosts the circulation, and makes the skin appear more bright and glowing after just one treatment. Because it exfoliates skin, it is also used to accelerate the Intense Pulsed Light acne and skin rejuvenation processes. When microdermabrasion is used in conjunction with these treatments, to treat acne scars and improve skin texture, suitable skin-care products will also need to be used at home.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MICRODERMABRASION?

Our skin naturally renews its cells over a period of about thirty days. During this process, the old skin cells tend to accumulate, thickening the outer layer of the skin (stratum corneum,) making the complexion appear dull and lifeless. Microdermabrasion is a gentle treatment to remove the dead cells, to reveal the new, softer, smoother skin.

HOW DOES MICRODERMABRASION WORK?

The microdermabrasion wand emits a stream of fine particles and simultaneously vacuums up the dead skin cells that the particles dislodge. We generally treat the whole of the face and the neck, while paying particular attention to any areas the client is concerned about.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT FEEL?

Patients feel a slight tingling, like the sensation of having very fine sandpaper rubbed over the skin. It is not unpleasant, and leaves a slightly flushed, wind-burned feeling for a little while.

WHAT ARE THE IMMEDIATE RESULTS?

Some redness for an hour or two after the treatment is quite normal, after which, the skin will look brighter, with a more even colour, and it will be softer to the touch. Sometimes, there might be slight dryness and flaking for a few days as the skin renews itself.
To avoid damaging the skin following treatment, further treatments that exfoliate, e.g. scrubs, masks and peels, should be avoided, unless your practitioner recommends them. You should avoid the gym, sauna, swimming and hot baths for the first twelve hours after your treatment, but otherwise there is no need to alter your normal routine. You should always apply sunscreen daily, to protect your skin.

AM I SUITABLE FOR TREATMENT?

All types of skin can benefit from microdermabrasion. It is ideal for the treatment of skin prone to acne and for enlarged pores. It helps to improve surface pigmentation and it stimulates removal of toxins by the action of the lymphatic system. We can also employ a lifting procedure which plumps and firms the skin.

HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NEEDED?

A course of between six and twelve fortnightly treatments is usually recommended for problem skin. Microdermabrasion is a progressive treatment, and the skin constantly renews itself, so to keep it at its best, most patients come for regular maintenance treatments.
