GLYCOLIC PEELS

Glycolic acid is the smallest molecule in the "alpha hydroxy acid" family. Glycolic acid is a natural constituent of sugar cane; because it is a natural substance there is a minimal risk of complications.

Glycolic Peels will also help to loosen and then exfoliate the dead surface area of the skin which helps the skin appear smoother, healthier, plumper and tighter. By allowing the penetration through the layers of skin to hydrate and stimulate the development of collagen: these peels are mostly best for fine lines, dry, dehydrated, dull, sensitive skin types, as well as oily, enlarged pores, clogged pores, mild acne and acne scarring types of conditions.

All patients will need to be assessed at the consultation, you will be advised of the procedure or any other treatment that may benefit the results for your skin condition. The practitioner will run through the products you will need to use, prior treatments to prep your skin ready for the glycolic peels. Preparing the skin is very important as allergic reactions to the glycolic is possible, although very rare, this gives the practitioner the chance to assess for any adverse reactions and in return will exfoliate the skin superficially to allow the peel to penetrate deeper.

As this is a chemical exfoliating process you are advised not to use any home exfoliating products ie scrubs, abrasive sponges or masks.

HOW DO GLYCOLIC PEELS WORK?

Glycolic treatments loosens the glue-like attachments of cellular cement that is characteristic of many skin conditions such as ageing acne skin discolouration and course texture. After a few weeks your skin looks brighter, clearer and dry skin becomes hydrated and smooth.

IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL?

Depending on the strength used once the peel is applied to the skin you may experience a mild stinging and tinging effect. This sensation subsides as soon as the peel is neutralised.

HOW WILL MY SKIN LOOK AFTER TREATMENT?

Your skin may be a little pink and some patients experience a sunburnt sensation for an hour following treatment but you can return back to work after the treatment.

HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY TIME AFTER THE PEEL?

Your skin may start to flake or peel 2 or 3 days after treatment. Your practitioner will advise on the correct products to use during this time. But you must not pick or scratch your skin while it is flaking.

Your practitioner will also advise you to use a high sun screen to help protect the delicate new skin.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

A course consists of 6 treatments every fortnight. But for more pigmentation damage or acne scarring you may need further treatments. Intense Pulsed Light treatments may be combined with glycolic peels to further improve the appearance, quality and texture of your skin. This will be discussed at your consultation after fully assessing your skin.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

Patients who are prone to cold sores must use preventive medicine for up to five days before each peel this may help stop a flare up of the condition. After a peel it is advisable that you use a high sunscreen, this will help prevent any unwanted pigmentation marks that may occur during your course of treatments. Your practitioner will advise you on suitable aftercare products.
